I hear you on so many levels of this. I also probably have sold one book for every six I've written. It's a hard thing to accept sometimes, and yet, I don't know what else to do with myself. It's the only thing I'm really good at AND enjoy. And coming from a theater background as well--that analogy is SPOT ON. (pun intended)
"Bread and Jam for Francis," (eating issues) and "Blueberries for Sal" (getting lost) - both big issues, and beloved by me and my kids (own kids and students). Loved your line about the surgeon.
Boy.....have I been thinking along these same lines myself. Is it reeeeeaaalllllyyyyy worth getting up at 3 am, sweating over every detail if I "build it, and no one comes?" But then...somehow...I just keep showing up believing that there will (one day, perhaps, maybe) be readers...
Love and resonate with every single word of this. AND it’s not “sour grapes” to point out how and why the traditional publishing industry is so dysfunctional. I know that’s not the point of this post but I do think it’s a relevant footnote. 🩷
